Oliver Chen
GKT committee member from 2022-3.2025
In summer of 2019, my sister, my friend, and I visited Spring Creek Assisted Living. We saw that most of the residents were handicapped and soritarily sitting in their wheelchairs. At that moment, the subconscious told me a strong urge to visit the elderly regularly. We began to discuss how to take action. However, due to various reasons and COVID, our plan was never realized.
Nevertheless, We never stopped thinking about the seniors in the nursing homes. After continuous efforts, in June 2022, along with four other kids, we finally established Glee Kids Troupe (GKT) to bring joy to the elderly, alleviate their loneliness, and deliver our blessings and warmth to them. We try our best to contribute to their physical and mental well-being in their later years with our creations of interactive activities and talent performances.
Through all members’ efforts, GKT has grown from a small group of seven to now more than 40 members. Along with more people joining us, we are able to provide elderly more care with much less loneliness. To better serve the elderly and support GKT’s operations, we established a Service Advisory Committee in January 2024. I was honored to become a member as a liaison, which has allowed me to practice more on valuable skills in effective communication, event planning, activity organizing and outreach conversation. The most important aspect is to be a better servant to others.
Although I will soon leave GKT to pursue my college education, serving the elderly in my community and giving back to society will always remain my lifelong mission. No matter where I am, I will do my best to continue this commitment. I am very proud of being part of GKT. And I really appreciate everyone working hard together to achieve our mission.
